'Suspicious envelope' sent to Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz's office, police say

MIAMI — A “suspicious envelope” was sent to the Sunrise office of U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz on Monday afternoon, police said.
The envelope was received by a “representative” in Wasserman Schultz’s office at 777 Sawgrass Corporate Pkwy., Sunrise Police spokesman Victor Fortune said.
The envelope “was safely secured and remains unopened. At this time, the contents of the envelope are unknown,” Fortune said in an email to the Miami Herald.
Wasserman Schultz acknowledged receiving the envelope in a statement posted on her social media pages.
“Today, like other Members, my district office received a suspicious letter. I’m thankful Sunrise Police and first responders acted swiftly to ensure my staff’s safety,” Wasserman Schultz wrote. “Cowardly acts of intimidation like this will not work. They have no place in our politics and must be condemned.”
Wasserman Shultz is in her 11th term, and is campaigning to represent the 20th Congressional District in Broward County following this year’s redrawing of congressional districts. She won the August Democratic primary and faces Republican Brent Andersen in the November general election.
