Trump plans for Board of Peace to meet in Washington this month

The U.S. plans to convene the first formal meeting of President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace in Washington on Feb. 19, according to a U.S. official.

The board was a core element of Trump’s 20-point plan that helped broker a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas in October. Trump led the initial gathering of the group’s members – about 20 nations including Belarus, Azerbaijan and Hungary — in Davos, Switzerland, in January, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum.

This month’s meeting would be the first in Washington, where the board will be headquartered. Trump has said it will be “the most prestigious board of leaders ever assembled, at any time.”

Initially, the White House described it as a narrow oversight body to help guide Gaza through disarmament and a technocratic transition — and it won United Nations support along with the broader peace process in November.

U.S. allies in Europe, leaders of international organizations and experts expressed confusion about the board’s true intent as its outlines have taken shape. The organization’s draft charter, for instance, didn’t even mention Gaza, and allies such as the UK, France and other members of the European Union were concerned enough to stay away.

More recently, the Trump administration has sought to ease concerns that the board was intended to supplant the U.N. or have a remit extending beyond Gaza, even though its own draft charter suggests otherwise.

Trump lashed out at Group of Seven allies who have shunned the board – threatening tariffs against France, and rescinding an invitation to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Trump didn’t invite Denmark, whose territory of Greenland he has said numerous times he wants to seize.

The board’s draft charter dubs it an organization — led by Trump — that “seeks to promote stability, restore dependable and lawful governance, and secure enduring peace in areas affected or threatened by conflict.”
