Amy Madigan has been cast with Tom Hanks and Callum Turner in The Comeback.

The 75-year-old actress, best known for her Oscar winning role as Aunt Gladys in Weapons, is the latest name to board the upcoming Sony movie, which has been hyped as a love letter to baseball.

The Comeback, which is based on a short story by Dave Eggers, followed a young New York Mets pitcher (Turner), who gets hit by a batted ball which turns his life upside down.

As reported by Deadline, Madigan's character is the owner of the team, while Hanks is playing the pitching coach alongside Patricia Clarkson as his wife.

The Diary of a Teenage Girl filmmaker Marielle Heller, who worked with Hanks on A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood, will direct from her own script.

The Comeback is being produced in cooperation with both the Mets and Major League Baseball.

Madigan is no stranger to baseball movies, having appeared in 1989 fantasy-drama Field of Dreams, which starred Kevin Costner as a farmer told to build a baseball diamond in his cornfield.

Costner's character Ray Kinsella heard a mysterious voice telling him the now-iconic line: "If you build it, he will come."

Madigan is set to reprise her role as Aunt Gladys in a sequel to Weapons, and director Zach Cregger recently admitted he is "really excited" for the reunion.

Speaking last month at Collider's Directors on Directing panel at the San Diego Comic Con, he said: "First of all, I'm really excited about the Gladys movie, and I loved working with Amy. I loved that character. For the movie Weapons, it really made a lot of sense not to dive into her backstory because the device of Weapons was to keep her very mysterious.

"However, there's an amazing story to be told about where Gladys comes from and how she became what we know her as. It's got a lot of twists and turns and mysteries and crazy things, like Weapons does. I think it's going to be great."

Zach added that the script is "in progress" and "moving in the right direction", insisting they are taking it "super seriously".

Weapons, which also starred Josh Brolin, Julia Garner and Benedict Wong, made $270million at the global box office, and featured Gladys feeding on the energy of children to stay alive.

Madigan previously admitted she was struggling to get used to the attention she was getting following the film's success.

She told The Guardian newspaper: "That's going to take some getting used to. I mean, it's crazy how people are responding to Gladys. But I have to accept that they're also responding to me."
