Sound Advice: Charger, earbud options for frequent travelers
Published in Entertainment News
Special travel column: I am writing this week's column from the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Given I am traveling I will highlight products that add convenience and fun to your journeys and are useful at home, too.
Lisen 3 in 1 Fast Travel Charger: I've become very fond of Lisen's power bank and wireless charging car mount, and use them every day. This inspired me to try the Lisen 3 in 1 Fast Travel Charger, a flight-approved charger that works as a wall charger and as a power bank. It has an integrated USB-C cable and a second, separate USB-C port. Plug it in overnight and it will charge both of your devices and fully charge the integrated power bank. The big 7,000 mAh capacity can fully charge an iPhone 17 Pro Max, and a screen shows how much power remains. So if you can't find an outlet, whether in a restaurant or on a plane, you can charge anyway. A charger you can use whether you have an outlet or not — now that is convenience! The Lisen 3 in 1 Fast Travel Charger typically sells on Amazon for $44.99, but the code LSTRAVEL at checkout reduces it $10 to $34.99. This is a great deal on a versatile product that keeps your devices powered up and running, no matter where you are.
Q. I am looking for wired earbuds I can use while flying, as I don't think all planes have Bluetooth to allow Bluetooth earbuds and headphones to be used with the in-flight entertainment. Do you have any recommendations for great-sounding wired earbuds with noise cancellation?
—J.E., Pittsburgh
A. Wired earbuds with active noise canceling aren't really a thing. You can get noise isolating wired earbuds (which keep noise out rather than cancel it electronically) or noise canceling Bluetooth earbuds. The latter can be used on airplanes by using an adapter, which I will describe below.
If you want to buy something wired I recommend the Meze Alba, which have a standard headphone plug but also includes a high quality USB-C to headphone adapter for use with phones and tablets. Beautifully made, beautiful sounding and offered by a revered luxury headphone manufacturer, at $159 they are a high-end bargain. mezeaudio.com
Rather than go wired, many frequent fliers are using an adapter to send a Bluetooth signal to their Bluetooth earbuds and headphones. These tiny, rechargeable devices have a plug that is inserted into the headphone jack of the in-flight entertainment system to send a Bluetooth signal to your devices. I've had good luck with the $29.99 Syntech Airplane Bluetooth Transmitter Receiver, which is currently on sale on Amazon for $22.99 with another 5% to 10% discount depending on the quantity ordered.
If you go this route, here are some new noise-canceling Bluetooth earbuds to consider. My current favorites are the $299 Technics EAH-AZ100 earbuds. Besides the excellent musical sound, they support Dolby Atmos and I have never heard an earphone that can create a sense of space and environmental presence like the AZ100. It's a real treat to watch movies and TV with them! us.technics.com
On the budget side, the $49.99 Soundcore P31i earbuds are well-loved by their owners and I found the sound and features to far outperform their asking price. They are currently on sale for $39.99 at soundcore.com, saving $10 with code WS241202US.
Looking for something premium, but priced in-between? The $279.99 Beyerdynamic Amiron 300 are currently on sale for $149.99 with free shipping. That's a wonderful value from this highly regarded German audio company. north-america.beyerdynamic.com
