NC State fraternity suspended and under investigation for hazing allegations

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina State University’s Sigma Nu fraternity is suspended and under investigation following reports of hazing.
WRAL first reported this story.
Earlier this month, university police received an anonymous report that an "an unspecified fraternity” was hazing its members using date rape drugs, according to the university’s crime log.
Now, university police is conducting a criminal investigation into Sigma Nu. The university is also separately investigating. Neither NC State nor its police force are willing to comment further on the status of those investigations. The university’s website says Sigma Nu has been “placed on an interim suspension pending further investigation.”
Sigma Nu is the oldest fraternity at NC State, according to the school’s Interfraternity Council. It was chartered in 1895.
The school said in a statement that it “does not tolerate hazing.”
“The safety and well-being of our students is paramount. Fraternities are expected to provide a member experience that aligns with the University’s policies. The University takes this expectation seriously and encourages the reporting of any concerns.”
Sigma Nu’s national chapter, based in Lexington, Virginia, weighed in on the suspension and investigation, calling hazing “the antithesis of the Fraternity’s mission to develop ethical leaders inspired by the Fraternity’s principles of Love, Honor, and Truth.”
“Recently, the Fraternity received information from North Carolina State University alleging the occurrence of hazing related to the Beta Tau Chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity at the University,” wrote Christopher Brenton, Sigma Nu’s director of communications.
“Both the Fraternity and University have suspended the activities of Beta Tau Chapter pending completion of an investigation of these allegations. Sigma Nu Fraternity will continue to cooperate with North Carolina State University in these matters. Any collegiate chapter or member of Sigma Nu Fraternity found responsible for hazing is held accountable in accordance with the Fraternity’s disciplinary procedures.”
Eight other fraternities are currently under disciplinary sanctions at NC State — mostly for violating alcohol or social event policies.
