Russia hits Odesa again as Black Sea shipping disrupted

Russia carried out a large airstrike on Ukraine’s port city of Odesa and the surrounding region as shipping in the Black Sea remains disrupted for both countries, affecting the export of commodities including grain.

Kremlin forces launched sea-launched cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and 129 drones across Ukraine, the General Staff of Ukraine said on Telegram. Ukraine’s air defenses shot down or suppressed 110 aerial targets, according to preliminary data.

At least 17 people were injured in the strikes, Serhiy Lysak, head of the Odesa military administration, said in a statement. A multistory residential building was significantly damaged, he said.

Russia and Ukraine have ramped up attacks on vessels and port facilities in the Black Sea over the past two months. That has severely constrained shipments of commodities, including wheat, oil, fertilizers and coal.

Russia’s defense ministry said its forces struck the Zaporizhstal steel plant in Zaporizhzhia, ore-processing plants and a metallurgical facility in Kryvyi Rih, and the Interpipe Steel complex in Dnipro, claiming the facilities supported Ukrainian military production, according to the state newswire Tass.

Ukraine hasn’t commented on Russian attacks on those facilities, and the claims can’t be confirmed by Bloomberg.

The Russian ministry also said its forces struck infrastructure and two cargo ships at Ukraine’s port of Chornomorsk, south of Odesa, alleging the vessels had delivered weapons and military equipment to Ukraine.

In Russia, air defenses intercepted 230 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions, according to a statement from the Russian Defence Ministry.

More than 70 of those drones targeted Russia’s southern Rostov region, including the port city of Taganrog, another hub for grain shipments, said regional governor Yury Slyusar. Falling drone debris sparked fires at several nonresidential buildings in Taganrog but no casualties were reported, Slyusar said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a post on X that a facility producing FPV drones, UAV storage sites and other military targets were struck in Taganrog.

Separately, Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces said Saturday that it struck Togliattikauchuk, a major Russian synthetic-rubber producer in the Samara region whose products are used primarily in tire and industrial rubber manufacturing. The Ukrainian military said the plant also produces monomers and high-octane fuel components and claimed its synthetic rubber is used in the production of solid rocket propellant for tactical and ballistic missiles. The claim couldn’t be independently verified.

Another chemical industry plant was hit in Russia’s Perm region over the past 24 hours, Zelenskyy said, without naming the facility. Russian authorities reported multiple drones in the region on Friday, but didn’t disclose any damage, while social media reports alleged that the UralChem-owned Azot plant in Berezniki had been targeted. Zelenskyy also mentioned an attack in the Black Sea without specifying the targets.
