Prince William rang in 43 on Saturday with the help of Kate Middleton’s traditional birthday portrait — and the royal couple’s new puppies.

The Princess of Wales, who typically photographs her family for their birthdays, shared the shot of William sitting on the ground, surrounded by their cocker spaniel, Orla, and her new brood of three.

“Happy birthday! Love C, G, C, L, Orla and the puppies!” Middleton wrote, referring to herself and their kids Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

The princess made headlines earlier this week after unexpectedly canceling her appearance at the Royal Ascot on Wednesday, two days after she attended the Order of the Garter service at Windsor Castle. The Royal Ascot would have been Middleton’s first return to the annual horse race since her cancer diagnosis last year.

Queen Elizabeth’s former spokeswoman, Ailsa Anderson, explained in a statement to People that Middleton is “being sensible, listening to what her body is telling her and easing back into public life.”

The princess announced in January that her cancer was in remission, but noted she’d remain focused on her recovery while taking time to “adjust to a new normal.”
